Family History and Heart Disease
Dr. Heath Saltzman, a cardiologist at Drexel Medicine, explains how family history affects heart disease.
Having a family member who had premature or early heart problems definitely increases the risk that the patient could have heart problems him or herself. So we look at that along with a patient’s individual risk factors – things like does the patient have high blood pressure? Is the patient a smoker? Does the patient have diabetes? And put all those risk factors together to determine an individual patient’s risk. And, based on that we can determine if any further testing or work up is needed to evaluate.
Drexel Cardiology provides outstanding heart care and utilizes state-of-the-art diagnostic and testing equipment, while adhering to the highest standards of patient care.
