Sleep is vital to our health so this month's health focus is on a topic that prevents millions of Americans from getting the important shut eye they need – sleep apnea. In fact, sleep apnea affects up to 18 million Americans according to the American Association for Respiratory Care. It is a potentially serious condition that often goes undiagnosed. People who have this condition stop breathing for short periods of time repeatedly while they are asleep.
Breathing pauses can last from a few seconds to minutes and result in poor sleep quality that causes you to feel exhausted the next day. Did you know that there are a few different types of sleep apnea?

Different Types of Sleep Apnea
The three different types of sleep apnea are: obstructive, central, and complex.
Obstructive sleep apnea is the most common of the three and occurs when throat muscles relax and block your airway. Central sleep apnea is caused by your brain sending improper signals to the muscles that control your breathing. It is also possible to have a combination of these two types which is then known as complex sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea has a variety of treatment options, but it often goes unnoticed and can lead to serious health problems.
