Nutrition Services at Drexel Surgery
All patients under the care of Drexel Surgery are screened by a member of its nutrition support service within 24 hours of hospital admission, to determine their need for supplemental nutrition. Following evaluation, patients are placed in one of the following categories:
Unlikely to require any nutritional support.
Unlikely to require nutritional support, but may require prolonged hospitalization and should be re-evaluated on a periodic basis for nutritional needs.
Will require a nutritional evaluation and, after evaluation, can benefit from supplemental enteral nutrition (moderate risk).
These patients require supplemental to full nutritional enteral and/or parenteral support during their hospitalization (high risk)
The nutrition support service is available for consultations 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including weekends and holidays. All category 4 (high-risk) patients will automatically have a nutritional support service consult placed within 24 hours of admission, unless cancelled by the primary service within this time period. All consults will be answered within 24 hours of request.
