Drexel Medical Diagnostics is a CLIA- and CAP-accredited laboratory located in the heart of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Through the use of advanced pipetting and robotics systems, we can customize design workflows to meet your needs. Drexel Medical Diagnostics’ laboratory is backed by the research and development expertise of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology and the Institute for Molecular Medicine and Infectious Disease at Drexel University College of Medicine.

Garth Ehrlich, PhD, FAAAS, FAAM
Technical Director
Dr. Ehrlich earned his PhD from Syracuse University in 1987 and is a professor of microbiology and immunology and otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at Drexel University College of Medicine. He is the executive director of three Research Centers of Excellence in the Institute for Molecular Medicine and Infectious Diseases and is the editor-in-chief of Genetic Testing and Molecular Biomarker.
Cheryl Hanau, MD
Medical Director
Dr. Hanau earned her MD from Jefferson Medical College in 1989 and has a focus on cytopathology. She is a professor and the Richard Shuman, MD, Chair of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine. Before her appointment as chair, Dr. Hanau served the College of Medicine in a number of other key positions, most recently as associate dean for admissions and program director of the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Residency. Dr. Hanau has been named as a “Top Doctor” by Philadelphia Magazine.
Yinghua Qiu, PhD, DABCC
Associate Medical Director
Dr. Qiu obtained her PhD in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Michigan in 2008. After completing her PhD, she undertook a two-year fellowship at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Clinical Chemistry and became a board-certified clinical chemist by the ABCC during her fellowship training in 2010. Her professional expertise spans several domains of clinical practice, encompassing clinical chemistry, clinical toxicology, therapeutic drug monitoring, molecular microbiology, as well as applying mass spectrometry in clinical settings and conducting basic research in proteomics.
Donald Hall, PhD
Operations Director
Dr. Hall earned his PhD in medicinal chemistry from Drexel University in 2020 and is currently the operations director of Drexel Medicine Diagnostics, as well as an assistant professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship focusing on microbiology and molecular biology at Drexel College of Medicine. Dr. Hall's lab specializes in researching anti-biofilm agents for the treatment of persistent infections and the in-silico development of novel compounds targeting the bacterial stringent response.
Brian Wigdahl, PhD
Chair, Department of Microbiology and Immunology
Dr. Wigdahl earned his PhD from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1980 and is professor and chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Drexel University College of Medicine. His research is in immunopathogenesis and neuropathogenesis of HIV-1 and HTLV-I infection as well as transcriptional regulation of retroviral expression.
Jim Sapienza, FACHE
Chief Clinical Officer
Mr. Sapienza earned a master’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in health administration from the University of Minnesota. He leads the medical clinics for Drexel Medicine and oversees the operations, strategy and business development for Drexel Medicine Diagnostics.
