CMV (Cytomegalovirus) Testing
CPT: 87497
Cytomegalovirus (CMV), also known as human herpesvirus 5 (HHV-5), is a common infection that can lead to serious complications in neonates, pregnant women, immunocompromised individuals and those receiving transplants. CMV normally does not cause severe disease, but in these populations it can be very dangerous. In its congenital form, passed from an asymptomatic mother to the newborn, CMV causes generalized infection that may be fatal, as well as potentially severe hearing and vision problems as well as learning difficulties. Laboratory testing is useful for diagnosis and monitoring of CMV infection, as well as screening for at-risk populations.
