Mitragynine (Kratom), Urine, Quantitative

OVERVIEW

Purpose: Detecting and confirming drug abuse involving mitragynine.

CLINICAL INFORMATION

Mitragynine, an alkaloid, is prominently present in the Kratom plant indigenous to Asia. The leaves of this plant are ingested for their stimulant and analgesic properties, with these effects primarily attributed to the presence of mitragynine. Notably, extracts derived from the Kratom plant are marketed for their potential medicinal benefits, albeit with the recognition of their potential for misuse. It's noteworthy that certain Kratom products have been reported to contain O-desmethyltramadol, which is believed to originate from external sources.
