Inclusive Sunscreen Options for All Skin Types and Needs

Erum N. Ilyas, MD, interim academic chair, and Willow Pastard, a medical student, both at the College of Medicine, wrote an Aug. 30, 2024 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette opinion article that advocated for changes to sunscreen to offer more inclusive options for all skin types and needs.

“We are taking the wrong approach to sun protection in the United States, particularly relative to skin of color. One of us has 20 years of clinical experience as a board-certified dermatologist, and the other is a medical student. Both of us have skin of color, and we can attest that currently available sunscreen products in the United States provide inadequate protection for non-white skin.”
