U=U Campaign
What does U=U mean? U=U stands for "Undetectable = Untransmittable." This means that a person with HIV who is on effective treatment will have very low levels of HIV in their blood. If they take their medications every day and keep their viral load undetectable, they cannot pass HIV to others.
A person with HIV who has an undetectable viral load can have sex without worrying about infecting their partner. They can also conceive children through intercourse instead of other methods.
There are times when someone who is undetectable should still use protection during sex, including:
- To prevent other sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
- To prevent pregnancy
- If they have multiple partners or a partner who is worried about STIs or pregnancy
